If you are searching for NCSF certification in Singapore, you are probably working out how to become a personal trainer and which credential to start with. This guide explains what the NCSF Certified Personal Trainer credential involves, how it is currently offered in Singapore, and what to check before you pay for any course, including ours.
A note on perspective: Carbyne Education runs the IFPA Certified Personal Fitness Trainer (CPT) course through Get Certified PT, so we are not a neutral party. We have kept this guide to facts published by NCSF, MySkillsFuture and SportSG, linked below, and we encourage you to check them yourself.
Publication date: 22 October 2026. Facts and official links reviewed on 26 October 2026. Fees, funding and exam rules can change; confirm the current details with the relevant organisation before enrolling.
What is NCSF?
NCSF stands for the National Council on Strength and Fitness. It describes itself as an international, member-driven organisation of exercise professionals, headquartered in Coral Gables, Florida, in the United States. Its entry-level credential for personal trainers is the NCSF Certified Personal Trainer (NCSF-CPT).
How the NCSF Certified Personal Trainer credential works
Like most personal-trainer credentials, the NCSF-CPT is awarded by passing an exam, not simply by attending a course. NCSF publishes the following details for candidates.
| Question | What NCSF publishes |
|---|---|
| Accreditation | NCSF states that its CPT credential has been accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) |
| Exam format | 150 multiple-choice questions in three hours |
| Where you sit it | At a Prometric test centre, or remotely through Prometric's ProProctor app |
| Passing score | A scaled score of 70 or higher, on a 0 to 100 scale |
| Retakes | A 30-day wait between attempts |
| Eligibility | Aged 18 or above with a high school diploma or equivalent; CPR/AED is recommended before working with clients but is not required to sit the exam |
| Validity and renewal | Valid for two years; renewal requires 10 continuing education units (CEUs) before expiry |
| Exam fee | US$399 for the first attempt and US$99 for a retake within six months; NCSF notes that fees may change |

- A full course fee of $999. The listing asks learners to confirm the final payable fee, including GST, with the training provider.
- 11 hours of classroom-facilitated training, conducted in English.
- SkillsFuture Credit as the listed support option. No SSG course-fee subsidy was shown.
Listings are updated by training providers and SSG, so read the current page rather than relying on our summary. MySkillsFuture listing TGS-2023020428
We have not repeated claims made on training providers' own websites. If any provider, including us, describes approvals, accreditations or partner status, ask which organisation granted them and how you can verify them.
You may also see "NCSF Uplift" in Singapore search results. SportSG's Inclusive Sport calendar describes it as a strength-training programme for persons with disabilities and special needs. It is a community programme rather than the personal-trainer certification described above. Inclusive Sport: NCSF Uplift
Completing a course is not the same as being certified
Whichever credential you choose, separate the training course from the certification exam. A course prepares you; the certifying body decides whether you are certified. Before enrolling, ask whether the exam fee is included, who sets and proctors the exam, how long you have to sit it, and what a retake involves and costs.
The same applies to our course. Completing our three-day IFPA course leads to a Certificate of Completion. IFPA certification requires passing IFPA's separate online test, which has 110 multiple-choice questions and an 80% pass mark.
NREP: both credentials are on SportSG's BES-equivalent list
If you plan to register with the National Registry of Exercise Professionals (NREP), SportSG asks for a relevant fitness or exercise certification, valid Standard First Aid with CPR and AED, and, from 1 June 2026, Basic Exercise Science (BES) or a recognised equivalent.
SportSG's Recognised BES Equivalent Certification List includes both the National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF) Certified Personal Trainer certification and the International Fitness Professional Association (IFPA) Personal Fitness Trainer certification. The list refers to the certification itself, not to attending a course.
Check the current list before applying; NREP acceptance remains SportSG's decision. SportSG's BES-equivalent certification list

Funding in Singapore: four different things
| Funding | What it does |
|---|---|
| SSG course-fee subsidy | Reduces the course fee itself. Only courses approved for SSG funding qualify, and the rate depends on the learner's age and citizenship. |
| SkillsFuture Credit | The learner's own credit, used against an eligible course fee. It pays part of the fee rather than reducing it. |
| PSEA | Funds in a Post-Secondary Education Account, usable for MOE-approved programmes. |
| UTAP | NTUC's reimbursement for eligible members, claimed after course completion and subject to annual caps. |
When comparing fees, compare the fee after any SSG subsidy and before SkillsFuture Credit. Your SkillsFuture Credit balance is yours to use on any eligible course, so it does not make one course cheaper than another.

Questions to ask before you enrol
- Which organisation awards the credential, and is the exam fee included in the course fee?
- How is the course delivered: how many hours, in what format, and with how many learners per trainer?
- Is there a practical assessment of your coaching, or only a written exam?
- What is the fee after any SSG subsidy and before SkillsFuture Credit, and does it include GST?
- How long is the credential valid, and what continuing education does renewal require?
- If you plan to register with NREP, is the credential on SportSG's BES-equivalent list?
